Your accountant hasn’t replied in two weeks. Everything you receive is in Greek and nobody explains it. Fines arrive and nobody warned you. If that sounds familiar, you’re not stuck: switching accountants in Greece is your decision, it can be done at any time of the year, and in most cases it takes days, not months.

Here’s how to do it without leaving a gap in your filings.

The short answer

  • You can switch at any time, including in the middle of the year.
  • You control the access. Authorizations in myAADE are granted and revoked by you, not by your accountant.
  • The handover is the critical part: filed returns, books, open obligations and deadlines.
  • Timing: ideally at the end of a month, and not right before a VAT or tax deadline.
  • Duration: in our experience about a week, once your old accountant has sent your records.

Signs it’s time to switch

Most people switch for the same reasons:

  • Late filings or fines you only find out about afterwards (Greek penalties are issued automatically, without a warning letter)
  • No answers, or answers that take days or weeks
  • Language: everything comes in Greek, nothing is explained
  • Surprise extra fees on top of the monthly price
  • No guidance: nobody tells you about deadlines, 5C, VAT rules or e-invoicing until it’s too late

One of these on its own might be a bad week. Several of them together usually mean the setup isn’t working for you.

Step 1: Check your contract and your status

Before you announce anything, check two things:

  1. Your contract: Is there a notice period? Some accountants work with monthly agreements, others with longer terms.
  2. Your current status: Ask your accountant in writing for an overview of what has been filed, what is still open and which deadlines are coming up.

Doing this first makes the rest of the handover much easier, and it gives your new accountant a clear starting point.

Step 2: Choose your new accountant

Look beyond the monthly price. Ask what is actually included: VAT returns, myDATA, the annual tax return, e-invoicing, and how quickly they reply. Our guide on what an English-speaking accountant in Greece should offer has a checklist, and what accountants cost in Greece explains typical price ranges.

Step 3: Give your new accountant access in myAADE

In Greece, your accountant works on your behalf through the tax authority’s online system. The authorization comes from you:

  1. Log in to myAADE with your TAXISnet credentials (your Greek tax portal login).
  2. Go to Registry & Communication → Authorizations (Μητρώο & Επικοινωνία → Εξουσιοδοτήσεις).
  3. Enter your new accountant’s tax number (AFM) and select which services they may handle. You can authorize specific services only and change this later.
  4. Your new accountant logs in to their own myAADE account and accepts the authorization. Until then it shows as pending acceptance.

You never need to share your password. In the same menu you can revoke your old accountant’s authorization. It’s good practice to also tell them in writing.

Your new accountant will also check access to the other systems your business uses, for example myDATA, e-EFKA (the social security portal), ERGANI (the Labour Ministry’s employee register) if you have employees, and your invoicing or e-invoicing provider.

Step 4: Get your records handed over

Ask your old accountant, in writing, to hand over:

WhatWhy it matters
Filed tax and VAT returns with proof of submissionShows what has been declared and when
Books and ledgersYour new accountant continues from here
Open obligations and upcoming deadlinesNothing gets missed during the switch
Payroll and employee records (if any)Needed for social security and ERGANI; see hiring your first employee
Access details for invoicing software or e-invoicing providerYour invoicing keeps running without interruption

Ask for the documents to go straight to your new accountant, and keep a written list of what was handed over and when. Settle any fees you still owe for work already done first: unpaid fees can hold up the handover.

Step 5: Pick the right moment

You can switch any day, but some moments are easier than others:

  • End of a month keeps the accounting periods clean.
  • Not right before a deadline: VAT returns, for example, are due by the last working day of the month after the period ends. Switching a few days before that adds unnecessary pressure.
  • Before your annual tax return season is a good moment if you want your new accountant to handle the full year.

How long it takes

In our experience, a clean switch takes about a week once your records are available. It takes longer if documents arrive slowly or if earlier filings contain errors that need correcting first. That’s also the moment many people find out what was missed, which is often the best reason to switch sooner rather than later.

What we charge

At taxomade, ongoing bookkeeping starts from €89/month, with myDATA, VAT returns and your annual tax return included, in English, German, Spanish or Greek. We coordinate the handover with your old accountant. See what’s included, or send us a message for a free check of your current setup.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change my accountant in Greece in the middle of the year?

Yes. You can switch accountants at any time of the year. What matters is a clean handover of your records and filings, ideally at the end of a month and not right before a filing deadline.

Do I need my old accountant’s permission to switch?

No. Authorizations in myAADE are granted and revoked by you, the taxpayer, with your own TAXISnet credentials. Check your contract for a notice period, and settle any fees you still owe, as unpaid fees can delay the handover.

How do I give my new accountant access in Greece?

You log in to myAADE with your TAXISnet credentials, open Registry & Communication, then Authorizations, enter your new accountant’s tax number (AFM) and select the services they may handle. Your accountant then accepts the authorization in their own account. You never need to share your password.

What should my old accountant hand over?

Copies of all filed tax and VAT returns with proof of submission, your books and ledgers, an overview of open obligations and upcoming deadlines, and, if relevant, payroll and employee records and access details for your invoicing software or e-invoicing provider.

How long does switching accountants take in Greece?

In our experience, a clean handover usually takes about a week once your records are available. It can take longer if your old accountant is slow to send documents or if past filings need correcting.
