How the 50% Tax Exemption Works

The Greek government introduced Article 5C of the Income Tax Code to attract foreign talent, remote workers, and digital nomads (with specific visas). Under this regime, 50% of your Greek-sourced employment or freelance income is completely exempt from income tax and the special solidarity contribution for up to seven consecutive years.

Who is eligible?

  • You must not have been a Greek tax resident for 5 of the past 6 years.
  • You must transfer your tax residency from an EU/EEA state or a country with a tax cooperation agreement with Greece.
  • You must start new employment in Greece or set up a new sole proprietorship (freelance business) in Greece.
  • You must declare your intent to stay in Greece for at least two years.

Important Note on Digital Nomad Visas: If you are a Non-EU citizen planning to use the Digital Nomad Visa (DNV), you are generally not eligible for this tax break, as the DNV prohibits you from entering the Greek labor market or setting up a local freelance business. EU citizens can apply easily.

How the math works

The standard Greek income tax is progressive, scaling from 9% up to 44%. If you earn €60,000, you are normally taxed on the full €60,000, pushing a large chunk of your income into the 44% bracket.

Under Article 5C, you are only taxed on €30,000. This not only halves your taxable base but also keeps your income entirely out of the highest tax brackets, resulting in a dramatically lower effective tax rate.
